What makes the heart of a city beat strong? Is it the people, the architecture, the history? A major new exhibition at the RBSA will consider all this and more…
Metropolis, sponsored by Maguire Jackson, features 98 works taking city living as the theme.
You’ll spot some familiar scenes from around Birmingham: the Bullring, Colmore Row, Digbeth High Street, Broad Street… tower blocks and train stations, and a host of local landmarks including Spaghetti Junction and the BT Tower.
But if you want to travel further afield you’ll also find works depicting Venice, Los Angeles, Lyon, Marseille, Hanoi and New York.
Reflections of cranes, bridges and girders; people going about their everyday lives; famous views and forgotten corners… there’s even two former poets laureate of Birmingham – a nice touch for our forthcoming poetry workshop with Mandy Ross.
Competition for coveted spaces at RBSA exhibitions is fierce. Works for Metropolis were assessed on whether they captured something unique about urban living.
Artist Steve Evans was one of the judges and said: ‘It’s been fascinating to see the rich diversity in terms of how artists approached the theme.
‘Visitors to the exhibition will be able to see many interpretations of city life, from a typical Birmingham family to relatively abstract impressions of buildings.
‘What I’ve particularly enjoyed as a judge is seeing fellow artist Sarah Stokes submit a scene of New York, which was accepted, and how being inspired to enter an exhibition can encourage you to branch out and do something a bit different.
‘It’s all about how imaginative you can be and how broad the theme is.’
Many of the works at the exhibition are for sale, so why not come to our gallery in the Jewellery Quarter and take home a piece of the Metropolis for yourself?
