Check out these stunning landscapes in our Open All Media exhibition

Our current Open Exhibition features work by artists from across the UK working in a range of media… and many of the paintings, sculptures and ceramics are for sale!

We asked our exhibitors what inspired the art on display, and had a fantastic response. In the first of a series on the Open, sponsored by Fresh: Art Fair, you can read all about some of the landscapes on show.

Why not come to the RBSA Gallery soon, and see what you could discover? Or if you are an artist keen to exhibit with us, why not enter our Prize Exhibition? Hurry, the deadline is 28 March…

Winter Screes Wastwater Patricia Haskey

When I visited this magnificent lake on a cold January day, the mountains and the famous red screes were shrouded in mist, which was the inspiration for this painting.

Based in the North West by the shores of Morecambe Bay, surrounded by beautiful landscapes, I love to walk through the countryside and sit and sketch the shapes and colours as they emerge and then dissolve in the ever changing light. I then work from these sketches back in my studio, aiming to express a feeling of place rather than a direct likeness.

As well as using brushes and fingers to apply the oils, I found new ways of using a palette knife to achieve different textures in this painting. It was while painting en plein air that I discovered these new techniques for applying the oils. Painting outside in the environment is an invaluable way of capturing the true colours, light and tonal values. Back in my studio I will use my plein air oil sketch as reference for colour and light, and photos as reference for details and composition to help me produce a larger painting.

Doone Valley Exmoor
Watercolour
Roger Griffiths RBSA
£375

Doone Valley, Exmoor Devon, Roger Griffiths

The landscape of Exmoor is a complex mix of enclosed farmland merging into the higher moorland. My aim is to interpret this pattern of boundaries, roads and marks made by agriculture overlaying the rolling landforms…

Roger is a self-taught landscape artist using watercolours and acrylic-based mixed media. He has exhibited with the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and featured in Sky TV’s Landscape Artist of the Year.

Swaledale
Oil on canvas board
Andrew Shorthouse
NFS

A beautiful moment walking the Swale and captured on the iPhone. What struck me was the late afternoon winter sky, its broken cloud and subtle pinks reflected in the expanse of water, the aerial perspective all the more dramatic from a position low on the bank. Fresh snow hanging in layers and broken by the reed clumps, detail fading into the distance adds to the perspective.

Composition was loosely guided by the armature of the rectangle (rule of thirds and related diagonals). Underlying pencil guided by a grid were followed by blocking in the main colours, followed by subdued thin impasto blues, browns, whites and pinks. The dominance of blue and the nature of the sky add to the coolness and a feeling of winter (apart from the snow of course!).

Making a purchase

We recommend viewing in person before making a purchase, but you can get a preview of many current exhibitions online at our Flickr page.

We take a deposit or full payment at the gallery, and you can arrange to collect your work once the exhibition is over. If you can’t make it to an exhibition, call us on 0121 236 4353 or email rbsagallery@rbsa.org.uk

You can also talk to the gallery about commissioning art. You may like the style of an artist, but have your own ideas.
