A Work of Art: John Shakespeare’s ‘Shoppers’

We often invite artists to talk about their work at ART BLOG. John Shakespeare is a Member of the RBSA and gave us this insight into his work ‘Shoppers’…

My painting, ‘Shoppers’ depicts the Royal Arcade in Lord Street, Southport.

Lord Street is famous for its Victorian and Edwardian architecture, though much of it is obscured by modern shop fronts. The street runs parallel to the seafront promenade — though resulting from geological change the sea has retreated by several miles.

However, the whole area is redolent of the genteel British seaside towns of a former era. I have tried to capture some of this in my painting.
