Spring has truly arrived, and to herald it in, we have a fresh and exciting programme for April. Catch our Open exhibition and Next Wave Associate showcase for the latest contemporary art, and be sure to check out Carnival, our colourful craft exhibition.
There are solo shows and artist events galore, and our new intake of Associates and Members will be celebrated in our Candidates Exhibition.
Next Wave Associate Showcase
Until 11 May
If you are curious about how the artists selected for the 2018 Next Wave exhibition are getting on, you have the whole month to pop in and find out!
Staging work by emerging artists, the RBSA helps those in the early stages of their career to develop their skills and make their presence known through a spectacular showcase.
Open All Media
Until 13 April
Open All Media is one of the most popular annual exhibitions at the RBSA, attracting both audience and entries from across the UK.
It provides a range of artists, both experienced and new-timers, to exhibit their work and be recognised for their talent. Works in all media except photography are shown, including: jewellery, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, drawing, painting and printmaking.
If you’re looking for a creative gift or a piece for your home, the majority of artworks are for sale and are priced competitively.
Jain McKay’s In Posterum
1 April – 25 May
Jain McKay’s style merges the art of printmaking and the techniques of the Old Masters to create something incredibly individual. Her new show looks at the advent of the technological singularity and the day that artificial intelligence becomes sentient. She questions whether it be a time to fear or celebrate, will it be the onset of Utopia or the end of the world as we know it? Don’t miss out on the opportunity to get your hands on some of her work at her print sale on the 27th of April!
RBSA Candidates Show
15 – 27 April
April ushers in anticipation as the RBSA prepares for the candidate’s exhibition, an annual showcase of artwork by artists applying to be Associates and Associates applying to be Members.
Existing Members and Associates visit the show to cast their votes on who they believe should be selected, come along and make up your own mind! The RBSA is over 200 years old and the Candidates show ensures it continues. Visit and see the future of the Society in the making!
Works on Paper
15 – 28 April
This pop-up exhibition will feature works by Members and Associates. All of the works are on paper but cover a different range of mediums.
George Jackson’s Process and Product
Until the 6 April
Don’t miss the final week of George Jackson’ Process and Product. An exhibition of forms intending to communicate how the making process impacts the individual character and structure of the finished piece.
The work displayed will include functional thrown ware, simple pinch pot forms, larger coiled work, decorative slab-built ware and some pate de verre cast glass. Ceramic pieces will feature both stoneware and raku fired work.
Mel Mars’ ‘Art from Mars’
8 April – 8 June
An exhibition of ceramics and glass that includes stoneware, raku-fired pots, sui pots and glass pieces. These techniques create interesting textures and colours on the surface of the pots.
Mel welcomes you to touch her works, to fully appreciate how the light changes when they are held at different angles and to feel the differing textures.
Artist demonstration with Terry Lord ABRSA
Newly-elected Associate Terry Lord will be in the Gallery, demonstrating how he paints his cityscapes and landscapes. Our FREE artist demos offer a great chance to get close to the painting process and ask a working artist questions about their methods and inspiration.
