Seeing and Thinking Portraiture
27 July & 26 October
This workshop with guest artists Paul Hill MBE and Maria Falconer FRPS will focus on how to engage with sitters in natural situations, using a range of simple techniques to create photographs that communicate more than a likeness. It is suitable for all abilities.
Paul and Maria have both been on the selection panel for the RBSA biennial Photographic Prize exhibition and are kindly offering this workshop at a lower price to help make it as accessible as possible to photography lovers. Workshops by Paul and Maria would normally start at £95 per day, making this an excellent opportunity to receive high-quality tuition at a budget-friendly price.
Copy, Proof, Print
05 August and 29 October
Eric Gaskell will guide you through the steps of drawing a design, cutting a lino tile and proofing to create a final print. His workshop is suitable for all abilities, including beginners. Eric is an Associate of the RBSA and a skilled printmaker specialising in lino-cut:
“Although my workshop is not a ‘drawing’ class, being open to trying out lots of ideas by drawing is essential. Drawing is fast, printmaking slow, so it makes sense to see what might happen beforehand. The linocut is quite a meditative process; cutting is done slowly and precisely, inking the block is done carefully and you handle the paper delicately.
07 August 2019
Also by Eric, this one-day introduction to drawing, cutting, and proofing a lino-cut print is suitable for beginners, but also for those who attended the ‘Copy, Proof, Print’ workshop and would like an additional day of support and guidance.

Photographing Your Artwork
16 – 17 August
This is a completely new workshop, created in response to feedback from our visitors and exhibitors. It is run by Birmingham-based photographer Olivia Swinscoe.
These one-hour, one-to-one sessions are for artists seeking to improve their ability to photograph their artwork and prepare images for online use. Those seeking more extensive guidance can book two sessions back-to-back.
The session will provide helpful tips on camera settings, lighting, and post-processing techniques and will result in at least one professional image of one artwork. This workshop is suitable for all abilities.
Olivia will have her own equipment on-hand, but we encourage attendees to bring the kit they have so they can apply the skills learnt back at home.
